23. Tagung der Europäischen Gesellschaft für Enterale und Parenterale Ernährung München, 8. bis 12. September 2001

Mein herzliches Willkommen den Teilnehmern der 23. Tagung der Europäischen Gesellschaft für Enterale und Parenterale Ernährung in München!

Ich freue mich, daß diese Tagung bei uns stattfindet, nachdem sie in den vergangenen Jahren zu Gast war in Madrid, Stockholm und Nizza. Das zeigt, daß unsere bayerische Landeshauptstadt im Konzert der bedeutenden europäischen Standorte von Forschung und Wissenschaft eine wichtige Rolle spielt. Gern habe ich deshalb auch die Schirmherrschaft für diese Veranstaltung übernommen, um so meine ideelle Unterstützung für sie zum Ausdruck zu bringen. Schließlich steht der Austausch von Erfahrungen und Forschungsergebnissen der führenden europäischen Fachleute im Mittelpunkt des Kongresses.

Die vergangenen Jahre haben den überzeugenden Beweis erbracht, daß es eine Mangelernährung in den Kränkenhäusern gibt, die zu finanziellen Einbußen im Bereich des Gesundheitswesens führt. Es ist auch inzwischen bekannt, daß die Aufenthaltsdauer und die damit verbundenen Kosten der Patienten dort am höchsten sind, wo eine Mangelernährung vorherrscht. Eine ausgewogene Ernährung ist demnach eine Voraussetzung für eine wirksame Therapie. Gerade die Anzahl der Patienten mit einem guten Ernährungsstatus ist der beste Indikator für die Qualität der medizinischen Versorgung. Der ESPEN-Kongress hier in München mit mehreren tausend Teilnehmern aus dem In- und Ausland wird sich gerade diesen wichtigen Fragen widmen.

Ich wünsche den Teilnehmern der Veranstaltung den Erfolg kollegialer Begegnungen und guter Gespräche.

23rd Congress of the European Society for Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition (ESPEN) Munich, September 8-12, 2001

I would like to extend a cordial welcome to Munich to you, the participants of the 23rd Congress of the European Society for Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition (ESPEN).

I gives me great pleasure that this congress is taking place here after having been hosted in the past years in Madrid, Stockholm and Nice. This reinforces our strong belief that the principal, and indeed, capital city of Bavaria is a major venue for important European meetings and a vibrant site in its own right – for research and development in basic and clinical science. It is also my personal pleasure to exercise my official patronage for this congress. I strongly expect the exchange of experiences and the results of research by leading experts to be a major focus of interest.

In the last few years we have witnessed the assembly of an overwhelming body of evidence that malnutrition in the hospital setting is too prevalent and that it is both a severe financial drain on the healthcare community and a source of lost opportunities for individuals and their families. Adequate nutrition is a prerequisite for achieving an optimal effect of any specific medical or surgical treatment offered to the patient. The recognition of the problems, and what to do about them are, I know, close to the hearts of all of you here today. I expect that at this Munich ESPEN with its thousands of participants, we will see important answers provided to pressing questions in the fields of basic and applied nutritional science and in clinical nutrition.

I wish all participants of the congress in Munich a successful meeting and many stimulating exchanges – both challenging and pragmatic – in their chosen fields.
